Written in Sand is an outstanding account of the history of Fraser Island, painstakingly pieced together from archival records, newspapers, books and personal interviews, much of the information never published before.
The latter half of Written in Sand deals with various aspects of Fraser Island that have shaped its contemporary history and, indeed, the island itself – pastoral leases and management of brumbies, timber getting, the reefs including the lighthouse that can no longer be visited by the community under QPWS management.
The controversies over sand mining and timber that led to opening the island to full scale TOURISM that was endorsed by FIDO AND THE MANAGER.
THE WHOLE IS EXTENSIVELY ILLUSTRATED WITH HISTORICAL DOCUMENTS, MAPS, AND OVER 150 PHOTOGRAPHS OF PEOPLE, PLACES AND EVENTS THAT HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO THE ISLAND’S INTRIGUING MOVING SANDS AND ITS HISTORY.
